Le thérémine, theremine, theremin ou thereminvox est un des plus anciens instruments de musique électronique, inventé en 1919 par le russe Lev Sergeïevitch Termen (connu sous le nom de Léon Theremin). Composé d’un boîtier électronique équipé de deux antennes, le thérémine a la particularité de produire de la musique sans aucun contact physique de l’instrumentiste. Dans sa version la plus répandue, on contrôle la hauteur de la note de la main droite, en faisant varier sa distance par rapport à l’antenne verticale. L’antenne horizontale, en forme de boucle, est utilisée pour faire varier le volume selon sa distance par rapport à la main gauche.

Greetings! I am Mr. Scruff, DJ, Producer, Cartoonist & Tea Drinker.

As a DJ, I play across the board, including Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, Jazz, Reggae, Latin, African, Ska, Disco, House, Funk, Breaks, Soundtracks & loads more. I make music that draws on these influences, with a large dose of cheek & good humour. There follows a rambling overview of what i have been up to for the last 20-odd years.

The event that first sparked my curiosity about music was in the early 1980’s when, as a young 2 Tone fan, I discovered a stack of my father’s original Blue Beat 7”s, including several Prince Buster songs that had been covered by my then favourite band, Madness. I suddenly realised that the new music I had been listening to had roots that reached far back, and this knowledge inspired me to explore the wider musical world which had just been revealed to me.

I encountered mixing as a 12 year old in late 1984, when a friend of mine played me his uncle’s electro records, notably the Streetsounds LP “Crucial Electro Volume 2”. At first, I assumed that the reason for there being no gaps between the songs was to fit more on the vinyl, it didn’t occur to me the mixing was a creative part of the presentation, and had been carefully thought out.

Earlier this month I read a feature in Vibe Magazine about J Dilla's legacy. The timing was poignant, coming just before the third anniversary of his death (on 10 February). It was a sad reminder of the loss of an enigmatic artist who had spent his life avoiding music industry politics.

Like many others, I became aware of Dilla rather late in the game. Born James Yancey, he deliberately engineered a low profile, preferring to focus on music creation rather than self-promotion. This attitude garnered the respect of the hip-hop community; Dilla successfully straddled the underground and mainstream with production for Janet Jackson, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Ghostface Killah and Madlib among others. Despite his prodigious talent and the accolades of his peers, he suffered at the hands of the music industry, losing songwriting credits and having both his MCA solo album and associated productions placed in limbo. Dilla responded with a pioneering album he called Ruff Draft, a DIY limited edition vinyl-only release via German label Groove Attack.

I remember buying the reissued Ruff Draft in 2007 and being shocked by the sonic genius of the tracks. From the spoken-word intro of "sounds like it's straight from the motherfuckin' cassette" to the acid rock of Nothing Like This and the futuristic outer-space dub of Pillz, the release demonstrated a wonderfully inventive approach to beat-making. Ruff Draft paid respect to the originators of hip-hop and early cassette culture, yet Dilla pushed the music forward, like a hip-hop Kevin Shields. His MO was to keep the music as raw as possible, incorporating reverb, heavy rock and psychedelia, all fused with a rough hip-hop grace. Listening to Ruff Draft now, you realise that Dilla, frustrated with the mainstream, had ripped up the hip-hop lesson books and started again, all tempered with his own immaculate production skills. You could hear the same wilfully experimental spirit in his production on Common's album Electric Circus.

Freed from music industry restraints, Dilla hooked up with Madlib for Champion Sound (released under the banner Jaylib), and his association with the Stones Throw label continued until his death from cardiac arrest brought on by a blood disoder, TTP. Dilla's final album, Donuts, is a hyperactive, spaced-out mix of tweaked electronics and hip-hop jams (only one track goes beyond the two-minute mark). Recorded on his deathbed, it's an eerie listen.

Since Dilla's death, Stones Throw and many other associates have been championing to keep his legacy alive. Every February is deemed Dilla Month, and this year sees the release of Beat Konducta: The Dill Withers Suite, Madlib's ode to his friend. Erkyah Badu paid musical tribute with the songs Telephone and The Healer on last year's stunning New Amerykah Part One (4th World War). Dilla's somnambulistic and aggressively hazy music has also found a foothold in the rock world, with Animal Collective, Gang Gang Dance, Black Dice, Deerhunter and Four Tet all namechecking him. In a disposable world, Dilla has proven himself a musical alchemist, whose influence lives on equally in hip-hop, soul and rock'n'roll.

Marin Marais (1656-1728) était un violiste ou gambiste (musicien jouant de la viole de gambe) et compositeur français de la période baroque.

Voici la bande originale qui tourne en fond sur l'analyse du tableau d'Antoine Watteau : "Voyage sur l'île de Cythère" (du documentaire d'histoire de l'art d'Arte -> "Palettes").

On notera sur le refrain assez langoureux cet aspect sombre & mélancolique qui annonce en (blue)note subliminale l'esprit romantique qui succèdera au Classique.

J'aime particulièrement cette pièce parcequ'elle est un subtile mélange, quasi-précurseur du romantisme et en même temps dans la tradition du pur Baroque que l'on kiffe bien-sûr nous les jeunes d'aujourd'hui ^^, avec ce refrain aussi lourd qu'un sample de jDilla (R i P) ... et ce silence presque religieux qui donne toute la couleure au mix (lol) ... euh à la variation d'intensité.

Quand vous êtes-vous rencontrés et quand avez-vous entendu parler de vos labels respectifs ?

Peanut Butter Wolf : Je me rappelle que Pedro est venu me parler dans un hôtel il y a de longues années pour me dire qu’il était fan de Madlib et de Dilla (Jay Dee, ndlr) et que Dilla avait bossé avec Daft Punk. Il m’a donné sa business card, qui a produit sur moi une grande impression. Elle était simple, mais elle se distinguait de toutes celles qu’on me donnait en général. Je l’ai montrée à Jeff Jank (le directeur artistique de Stones Throw ndlr) en lui disant : « On doit faire de nouvelles cartes, regarde celle-ci ». Jeff nous a donc designé de nouvelles cartes, un cercle avec un trou comme un disque vinyle. Plusieurs années ont passé avant que je revoie Pedro. A ce moment, on avait de nouvelles business cards !

Pedro Winter : C’est marrant, mais à mes yeux, Throw n’a pas d’âge. Ce label a près de 15 ans, et pour moi, il fait partie du game au même titre que Def Jam ou Rawkus ...

Pierre Henry’s “Apocalypse de Jean” (1968) for example, a three-hour electronic oratorio of the biblical revelation of John; or “Le chien andalou,” the surrealist film classic, which Buñuel made with Salvador Dali; or Miles Davis’ “drug phase” between “Bitches Brew” and “Big Fun.” Contrary to what one hears, Oizo is a very nice, normal interview partner. He enjoys discussing the concept behind the new album “Lambs Anger”: “There is no concept. I recorded the album like a monkey, without thinking about it. At some point I realized that everything I like in my discography was done very quickly. On my last record, I still worked on a 20-second-long beat for two weeks. This time everything went real fast. With music, it’s about energy and not intellectual stuff. Music has to be close to the animal side of things.”
